Where Ravens Feed  written by Graeme Miles

Graeme Miles wrote this song circa or about 1966 and I feel that it will, along with many of his other songs, last well into the future. I remember him saying that it was written on one of his visits to The Lake District where the scenery and atmosphere inspired him to write ‘Where Ravens Feed.’ Our friend Gordon Simm, sadly no longer with us, sang many of Graeme’s songs as well taking great photographs of places that fall into line with many songs about the landscapes that Graeme loved .                             Martyn

Gordon Simm was passionate about Folk Music something l shared and from the late 60’s we went to many folk clubs and really enjoyed the music. After a gap due to bringing up a family we got back to Folk music , clubs and festivals. At the age of 50 he taught himself to read music and play the English concertina. We were lucky enough to meet Graeme Miles and spend time with him, admiring his writing but also how Martyn Wyndham-Read a dear friend sang so well many of those songs. Gordon also loved walking and his love of photography became a side by side hobby.  A love of nature, flora and fauna took him to many parts of the u.k and Europe often walking and carrying a rucksack & tent as he went. Through his photography he co -wrote two Map and guides with Jaquetta Megarry Publisher and owner of Rucksack Readers, Gordon was  principal photographer for Hadrian’s Wall Path  and Cleveland Way.                   Gordon died in 2012 doing what he loved, walking in Spain.

Where Ravens Feed

by Graeme Miles

I roam and ramble in lonely places

All in the coolness of the rain

Over rolling hill and rugged mountains

Over sandy heath and grassy plain

And should you ask am I content there

I’d answer yes oh yes indeed

For my heart it dwells in lonely places

Where springs leap down where ravens feed

…..

I seek and find these lonely places

Where bounds the hare and deer run

Over crags of grey and mossy boulders

Shaded from the morning sun

And should you ask am I at ease there

I’d answer yes oh yes indeed

For I’ll always love these lonely places

Where springs leap down where ravens feed

…..

I yearn and long for lonely places

Where hunts the fox and badgers play

Where midnight stars are at their brightest

Where snow lies deep where mists hang grey

And should you ask am I at home there

I’d answer yes oh yes indeed

For my desires are for lonely places

Where springs leap down where ravens feed

…..

I lose myself in lonely places

On heathered moor and bracken fell

And with the wind hold conversation

It always has so much to tell

And should you ask am I at peace there

I’d answer yes oh yes indeed

For I’ll always need these lonely places

Where springs leap down where ravens feed

……
