Come Out T’is Now September

Come Out T’is Now September is a song that has been performed each year as part of our  show ‘Maypoles to Mistletoe’. It was a set of words from Henry Sirman a farm hand at Stanton Harcourt.  Tune written by Mike and Jackie Gabriel of Cheltenham.  Martyn

Come Out T’is Now September   ( The Ripe and Bearded Barley)

Come out tis now September the hunters moons begun

And through the wheat and stubble we hear the frequent gun

The leaves are turning yellow and fading into red

While the ripe and bearded barley is bowing down his head

CHORUS

All among the barley who would not be blithe

While the ripe and bearded barley is smiling on the scythe

The wheat is like a rich man it’s sleek and well to do

The oats are like a pack of girls they’re thin and dancing to

The rye is like a miser all sulky mean and small

And the ripe and bearded barley is monarch to them all

CHORUS

The Spring is like a young girl who doesn’t know her mind

The Summer is a tyrant the most ungracious kind

The Autumn is an old friend who pleases all he can

For he brings the bearded barley to glad the heart of man

CHORUS
